An 8 year old girl was asked, "If you could give an invisible gift to someone you love, what would it be and to whom would you give it?" She replied, "I would give the gift of time to my Mommy & Daddy - they are always too busy."
We can all spread ourselves too thin, taking on more than we can handle. What is it? Are we afraid that if we take a moment of rest , we might discover that all our busyness is covering up a lack in our lives? We wear our busyness like a badge. We use it as an excuse for being late, being rude, being unproductive, and not wanting to take time for others.
Are you a person that becomes irritable when there is no schedule to speak of and even more irritable when there is a schedule to speak of and somebody comes along and disrupts it? This doesn't go well for those of us who say we want to imitate and be like Jesus. We don't exactly see Him checking His cell phone every few minutes to check His agenda. Whenever Jesus was in the midst of all His business, He withdrew to out of the way places to pray,
(Luke 5:16). He withdrew in order to work through tragic news, such as when he learns that His friend John the Baptist had died. He withdrew to gain insight on important decisions, such as which men to call to follow Him. He withdrew to take time with his closest friends. When He sensed it was time to withdraw, He just removed himself from the pull of all the people around him.
God never told us to be busy
I love Philippians 1:10 where Paul prayed for the church to learn to sense what was vital and to approve and prize what was excellent and of real value. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus is speaking saying: Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
