Don't underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
Lets not get so busy in life that we forget to smell the roses and encourage the people that are all around us.
A few years back, I received a call from a young lady who was at a crossroads in her life. Her relationship was falling apart, there were financial problems, she had three children and had just found out she was pregnant for the fourth and was considering having an abortion. I could tell by her voice that she needed a hand-up, a word of encouragement, a real person to talk to, so I went over to see her.
She didn't know me, and I didn't know her.
When I arrived at her house, her little girl answered the door and she was sitting in the corner of the room, with her feet pulled up, sobbing and her body shaking. After giving a few words of encouragement, I asked her a couple of questions, and then let her know that what looks like an impossible situation can be turned around in time, with God's help. I could sense the hope rising up in her as I explained to her that God had a plan for her life.
Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.
Isaiah 41:13 - For I the Lord your God hold your right hand: I am the Lord, who says to you, Fear not; I will help you!
I was able to share with her what the Bible says regarding the sanctity of human life from Psalm 139: 13,14 - "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." She started to weep, and God opened her eyes to the truth, that inside of her was a precious life that God himself was forming and shaping into something beautiful. As we prayed together, God's presence filled the room as this young lady accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour and turned her life over to Him for a brand new beginning. Wow, what a special moment that was!
That evening I picked her and the children up to attend a musical at our church and her little girl said to me with excitement, "Mommy is having a baby".
By the end of that night, the woman I went to see that morning that was distraught and overwhelmed with her life, had a smile on her face and a hope for her future.
Each day you and I have the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. Let's seize every opportunity to focus our attention on helping and serving others.
